How to find cheap last minute flights for your trip
This blog post is Part 1 of our series "How to find a last minute trip and plan for it without stress"
In this first part we will teach you one of our most used methods to find cheap flight tickets. So let's get started, shall we?
Last minute trips can be equal parts exciting and stressful, so we will share some of our secrets to keep them cheap instead of expensive.
How to find cheap last minute flights
Check nearby airports.
- If you already know the location, check nearby airports. In Europe for example is quite common to travel to a nearby city and take a train. That way you can save a few hundred euros at the cost of a 2-3 hour train ride.
- Some cities have multiple airports, so be sure to use the option to check nearby airports now available in almost every flight search engine such as Google flights or Skyscanner
Check One-way vs Round trip?
Round trip flights are usually cheaper, but as the date approaches it might not be the case. It is possible to save by booking one-way tickets, in different airlines, airports and even cities. Search first for round trip and use the cost you find as the base you will be comparint against, then search for one-ways to see which last-minute flights price out the best. Look if its possible to start your journey in one airport and come back via another airport.
Hunt deals with agencies. Beat that introvert within you and get on the phone.
Some travel companies aimed at selling vacation companies sell off last-minute trips at huge discounts when the date is too close or some other customers cancel. Call and ask if they have any same day deals or next day deals. Some of these companies usually work only in their own local language, Many countries have their local tours, charters and travel agencies. If its last minute and someone canceled they will be more than happy to sell instead of wasting that inventory.
Wait until last minute. Waaaait, waaaaait, waaaait.
Procrastinators will love this one. Waiting until the very last second before making a move can pay off. Flight prices drop as the departure draws super close. One day before and the big day itself are good dates to check. Risky ? Yes ! Worth it ? Depends on your risk level tolerance :))
Take the red-eye.
These flights tend are less desirable by travelers so usually they're less expensive and less crowded. Low cost airlines usually travel within these times so it is likely you'll find something if you don't mind arriving super late at your destination.
